Does the idea of transformation influence your work and process?
Yes. I'm interested in how ideas filter through the artistic process. Choosing colors, making shapes and simplifying the subject are all integral to my way of working. I ended up using gesso over 90% of this painting and radically changing the palette before it felt like the original idea to me.
What do you hope your work achieves?
I'm satisfied when the painting begins to feel like a symbol for my original idea. I hope that viewers feel the mystery and power of that symbol.
