Works of art to grow…breathing room,
Thinking room,
And room for reverence under the canopy of these selected works…
Art spaces and trees share a commonality; they both create environments (each altering the spaces they occupy). They render any dwelling more expressive, more brimming with life, and energy.
This exhibit echoes moments in the woods. Verum is an intimate space and like a forest many overlapping works layer within the sightline to create an overall fabric of texture with lots of earthy neutrals and pockets of blue sky and warm tones (like the sun filtering through a halo of trees). And like the forest, there is a lot to discover in this tree-ed space (by looking up, looking ahead, and even peering downward), so pull up a chair or lasso a floating one (like David Carmack Lewis’s, Relic).
The selected works are a diverse collection (from cyanotype, found materials, fiber, every variation of paint media, steel, gold leaf, beeswax, tree sap, photography, linocut, woodcut and more). They share a voice and vision projected through materiality along with creative innovation. They also share a language of visual poetry that is deeply connected to nature (whether with a highly sophisticated minimalist display, with more illustrative whimsical satire, and beyond).
Trees mark time, place, and they mark life itself as the air we breathe. It seems that now (more than ever) we need to cherish resources to maintain our humanity. This collection of 33 poignant works echo the forest, but it also reflect our impact on the natural world and how our overwhelming need and greed have led to catastrophic consequences for the planet. The clock is ticking and we are charged with listening, watching, noticing, and changing.
